If you’ve ever landed in Florida and thought, “Now how do I get from here to there without renting a car, battling traffic, or paying surge pricing?”… let me introduce you to one of Florida’s best kept travel secrets.
Brightline.
It’s sleek. It’s fast. It feels a little European. And for cruisers and vacationers especially, it can be a total game changer.
Let’s break it down clearly so you know exactly how to use it.
Brightline is a high-speed passenger rail service in Florida connecting:
Orlando
West Palm Beach
Boca Raton
Fort Lauderdale
Aventura
Miami
For my cruise clients sailing from PortMiami or Port Everglades (Fort Lauderdale), this is an incredibly convenient option. It also connects directly to Orlando International Airport (MCO), which makes it ideal for combining theme parks + cruises.
Think of it as your stress-free bridge between Central Florida and South Florida.
No I-95 traffic. No rental car lines. No white-knuckle lane switching.
This is where people sometimes get confused, so let’s make it simple.
Brightline uses a zone-based fare system.
A “zone” is essentially a segment between major station regions. The longer the distance between zones, the higher the fare.
For example:
Miami to Fort Lauderdale = Short distance, lower fare
Miami to West Palm Beach = Mid-range fare
Miami to Orlando = Long distance, higher fare
You’re paying based on how many zones you travel through.
It’s not complicated once you book, but the key idea is:
👉 The farther you go, the more zones you cross.
Pricing varies based on:
Distance (zones traveled)
Time of day
Demand
Class of service
Here’s a general range so you can plan:
Miami to Fort Lauderdale: Often starts around $10–$25
Miami to West Palm Beach: Typically $20–$40
Miami to Orlando: Usually $39–$79+ one way
Premium includes:
Larger seating
Lounge access
Complimentary snacks and drinks
Priority boarding
Expect:
Miami to Orlando Premium: $79–$149+ depending on date and demand
Prices fluctuate just like airfare. Booking earlier typically secures better rates.
If you're flying into Orlando but cruising out of:
PortMiami
Port Everglades
Or even doing a pre-cruise Miami stay
Brightline eliminates the need for:
One-way car rentals
Long shuttle rides
Expensive private transfers
You land at MCO → walk to Brightline → glide down to South Florida → Uber to your hotel or cruise port.
It’s clean. It’s comfortable. It feels organized.
And after navigating airports, that level of calm feels like luxury.
Here’s what to expect:
Orlando to Miami: Approximately 3 to 3.5 hours
Orlando to Fort Lauderdale: Around 3 hours
Miami to Fort Lauderdale: About 30–35 minutes
No stop-and-go traffic.
No construction delays.
No GPS recalculating your sanity.
Brightline allows:
Carry-on and checked luggage options
Overhead and dedicated storage
Easy boarding process
Stations are modern, well marked, and centrally located.
The Orlando station is inside Orlando International Airport, which makes it extremely easy for travelers.
Brightline makes the most sense when:
✔️ You’re flying into Orlando but cruising from South Florida
✔️ You want to avoid renting a car
✔️ You’re doing a split stay between Orlando and Miami
✔️ You prefer structured transportation over rideshares
It may not be ideal if:
You’re traveling with very large groups needing multiple connections
You have unusual luggage needs
You’re staying somewhere far from a Brightline station without easy Uber access
But for most couples and families? It’s smooth sailing before you even hit the ship.
One very important thing to understand:
Brightline does NOT offer direct service to Cape Canaveral or Port Canaveral.
The train connects Orlando with South Florida including:
West Palm Beach
Boca Raton
Fort Lauderdale
Aventura
Miami
If you are cruising out of Port Canaveral, you will still need ground transportation from the Orlando station to the cruise port. That drive is approximately 45 to 60 minutes depending on traffic.
Brightline is ideal for:
Orlando ⇄ Miami
Orlando ⇄ Fort Lauderdale
South Florida city-to-city travel
But it does not run directly to the Space Coast cruise terminals.
Think of Brightline as your connector between Central Florida and South Florida, not a direct cruise port shuttle to Cape Canaveral.
Florida is long. Longer than people realize.
Orlando to Miami is not “right there.” It’s about 230 miles.
Brightline turns that stretch into something comfortable and predictable instead of stressful and exhausting.
As your travel advisor, my goal is always to remove friction from your trip. And sometimes that means looking beyond flights and cruise fares and helping you connect the dots in between.
Because the journey to your vacation matters just as much as the vacation itself.
If you're planning a Florida cruise or Disney + cruise combo and wondering whether Brightline fits your itinerary, let’s talk. I’m happy to map it out for you and make sure every piece flows beautifully.
